Respirometry – From Research Tool to
Online Process Control
Respirometry can quite literally be derived as a
general term that encompasses a number of
techniques for obtaining estimates of the rates of
metabolism of vertebrates, invertebrates, plants,
tissues, cells or microorganisms.
It has been used as a technique in the wastewater
industry since the 1950’s and was originally seen
as an instrumental alternative to the BOD test
(which was limited to manual titrations at the time.)
The test has developed significantly since then and
is now used today as a technique to measure the
kinetics of wastewater treatment, oxygen utilization
rates, the impact of toxic shock events and process
control.
Respirometers are based on the principle that what
is measured is the rate at which the biomass
consumes dissolved oxygen. This rate is
measured either directly, measuring the dissolved
oxygen concentration in the liquid phase, or by
measuring the gaseous oxygen concentration
either by paramagnetics, or by measuring the
changes in gaseous oxygen concentration using
manometric or volumetric techniques.
When you look at the benefits of measuring with
respirometry, the usefulness of the technique, in
providing a measure of the health of the biomass,
is a very powerful technique that gives a complete
picture of how the biological system is operating.
The respirometry methods and equipment have
come a long way from the flask and U tube
manometer, to the computer controlled systems
available today. Respirometry is a valuable tool in
understanding and optimizing biological
processes, but like most tools, requires some
experience to realize its true value. As scientists
and engineers continue to explore new ways to use
these tools, Challenge Technology will strive to
provide them with the state of the art equipment to
process better quality water more efficiently.
